Plans to honour Lanarkshire football icon continues despite long delay

The pandemic put on hold the plans for the statue to Tommy Gemmell being constructed.

The plan for a statue for one of Lanarkshire’s favourite football heroes is continuing despite delays due to Covid.

Tommy Gemmell, part of Celtic’s famous 1967 European Cup winning side, was due to have a £40,000 sculpture constructed in his honour alongside the “Welcome to Craigneuk” sign on Glasgow Road.

Sadly, the pandemic put the plans on hold as well as other logistical pressures, namely a change of location for the statue.

The new site has now been secured and will be made public in due course.
